What is the background of Rolex ?



 

Rolex is brand of wrist-watches; they are much-sort-after because of the varieties they have in quality and cost ranges. These watches are known to be used by wealthy people with an eye for elegance. Apart from being a symbol of success and pride, the watches have well-built reputation because of their functions and various designs.


The Rolex Company was founded by two men, Mr. Hans Wilson and Mr. Alfred Davis, his brother-in-law, in the year 1905. The original name of the company then became Wilsdorf and Davis which later changed to Rolex Company. The trade mark “Rolex” was registered by Hans Wilson in 1908 in Switzerland. Though its origin is not known, the word, Rolex is derived from French phrase “horlogerie exquise”, meaning an exquisite watch industry.

During these days wristwatches were considered to be for ladies. Though, traditional associated with men it was tough to overcome this kind of allusion which was bound in the minds of men. All these obstacles never derailed Wilsdorf who maintained that wrist watch was the only future in terms of watches.

His work paid in the year 1910 when he was recognized by the “bureau official” in Benin. Being reorganized by the authority scored allot for the company. Men and women alike become at ease- to start using watches.

There were problems which were being faced by the watch users during those early days; the problems were: accumulation of dust into the inner parts of the watches and water getting into the watches. These disadvantages made the watch maker, Rolex, company to device water and dust proof watch models. To do this, they had to modify the casebook and the crown. Wilsdorf then devised as crew crown and casebook which finalized this quest.

After this giant, technological, step the people couldn’t yet trust the discovery. It took the company time to do extra marketing to showcase the technology and the fact that the brand was truly waterproof. This brand was later received overwhelmingly exposure world-wide after strong marketing strategies were launched.

With Rolex, way ahead of the rest in the market, a tight competition ensued, and other watch manufactures emulated the waterproof brand to gain a space in the market. Wilsdorf created a lifetime legacy, a legacy that lasted until his death in the year 1960. His work collogues described him as a man who loved and appreciated work well done. After his death, two years later, the board of directors of the rolex company did a replacement.

He was replaced by Mr. Andre Heiniger who was 40 years old by the time he got into the office. Andre worked under Wilsdorf for 12 years and had followed his footsteps. With the experience he gained while working under Wilsdorf, Mr Andre steered the company to remain resilient to various challenges.

The company has managed to spread its branches all over the world considerably since 1912 to current dates, i.e. Asia, Australia, Geneva, North America, etc. With all these branches, the company remains one of the most competitive wristwatch manufactures till to date.
